Towards a Worldwide Influencing Network

Oxfam Novib and SOMO share the vision that we can achieve to live in a just world without poverty. To tackle the injustices that cause and perpetuate poverty, we are working through a partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to make the world safer and fairer for everyone.

A world in which all people, including those who are often not included in decision-making, can play an active role in building an equitable world where they can realise their basic rights: their right to food; the right to live in a democratic society with a fair distribution of public resources; and the right to live in peace and security.

This strategic partnership enables us to empower people to stand up against injustice, develop capacity of organizations and alliances in a worldwide network. Together with the people we work with we  influence governments and private sector parties to improve policies and practices for people living in poverty and injustice.

The Strategic Partnership ‘Towards a worldwide influencing network’ enables our influencing work on three thematic areas ‘Right to food’, ‘Greater responsibility in finance for development’, and ‘Conflict and fragility’. It enables us to empower people and to influence governments and private sector parties to improve policies and practices for people living in poverty and injustice. The partnership is an agreement of an alliance of Oxfam Novib and SOMO with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Oxfam Novib and SOMO’s aim is to empower groups that risk facing violence, discrimination and marginalisation. This means that we will give particular attention to the needs and interests of women by including a gender justice analysis to inform the choice of our interventions and the organisations we want to work with. Knowing that our work on lobby and advocacy has to respond to the realities of the countries and regions we work in, we also work across our thematic areas on civic space and conflict sensitivity that affect the context within which we operate.

In 2016 the Strategic Partnership took off in 17 countries in Asia and Africa, where we entered into collaboration with more than 80 civil society organizations, networks and alliances. We aim to strengthen their local influencing capacities and link these to Oxfam’s   global campaigns. Our ambition is to link local to global issues and move towards a truly Worldwide Influencing Network.

Right to Food

The world produces sufficient food to feed everyone and yet 795 million women, men and children are undernourished. This gross injustice is systemic: inherent to our global food system. The Right to Food program fights these injustices in 8 countries, with 33 partners, to defeat poverty.

Greater responsibility in finance for development

Oxfam Novib and SOMO see fiscal justice as central to the fight against economic inequality. Within this programme we address these injustices to defeat poverty.

Conflict & Fragility

In our vision for a just world without poverty, people can participate fully and influence the decisions that affect their lives. Conflict obstructs development and is a key driver of humanitarian need. Oxfam Novib and SOMO address the root causes of conflict so that people find peaceful solutions and transform their lives.
