Refugees in Greece can only wait

The last months many refugees and migrants arrived in Greece. People wait up to five days to register for Greek documents. They need to do so in order to be able to travel by ship to Athens and onward to Western Europe.

In October 210.000 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece, 7,000 a day. Islands like Lesbos en Kos can’t cope with the massive influx. Refugees suffer while they stand in line for days to register themselves.

Oxfam is calling for urgent and immediate action by the international community to deal with the deepening migrant crisis. Many families have to survive in the open air with no access to decent shelter because there are simply not enough tents. For those who did not survive the perilous journey there is no more room on the crowded cemeteries.

Oxfam provides emergency relief for refugees arriving on Lesbos and Kos. We provide at least one hot meal per day. With a local partner, we are preparing for winter-survival kits. These include warm clothing and waterproof sleeping bags. This is important because most refugees brought the bare minimum with them. They are not prepared for rain and cold.
