Education is a right, not a luxury

Roda is a student at Mundri 2 Primary School, in South Sudan. She’s lucky. Only 1 in 4 girls goes to school in Sudan. Many parents can barely pay the school fees and therefore often choose to send their son to school.

Before Roda goes to school she cleans the compound of her house, does the dishes and makes breakfast for the whole family. Together with her niece she walks to school. In the afternoon after a short chat with class mates she walks home and starts preparing food for dinner and fetches water at the nearby water pump. In the evening she spends some time together with her younger brothers and sisters with whom she shares a room.

Roda Wilson Elionai (17) can go to school thanks to the Mundri Support Education project, which is made possible by a partnership between Oxfam Novib, the New Sudan Women Federation and the MRDA (Mundri Relief and Development Association).
