Extra funds from the National Postcode Lottery provide education and healthcare to more than 200,000 Congolese. Tens of thousands of former child soldiers in Uganda get a chance at a new life.
A matter of common sense
In 2009 Oxfam Novib and Médecins sans Frontières received 1.7 million from the National Postcode Lottery. Destination: the project ‘A Matter of Common Sense’ in the Congolese province of South Kivu.
Thanks to the contribution 4,000 children and adults are now getting an education. More than 200,000 people have access to medical care. They no longer have to walk for days to get to see a doctor or hospital. Our partners are providing education in this field.
Learning about living
In the project ‘Learning about Living’ we work with War Child. The National Postcode Lottery made this possible with an extra contribution of more than one million euro. As a result 42,000 children and 8,000 adults are getting a chance at an independent future.
In the Ugandan civil war many children were kidnapped to work as soldiers. They’re now receiving psychosocial support and job training. With accelerated learning programmes they can yet pass their exams.
Many Ugandan parents can neither read nor write. But thanks to this project they are at school sitting next to their children. Old and young are encouraging each other to forget the harrowing war years and to learn about living.
