In 2008 we supported 52 million people in their struggle for an independent livelihood. In Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. We did this together with 861 partner organisations.

In our Annual Report you can read about our achievements in 2008, and our failure. Two examples follow below. Our Annual Report 2009 will appear soon, late April.

The 2009 Green Santa campaign revealed that there is a high demand for fair chocolate letters. In December Lidl, HEMA, V&D, Albert Heijn, Jamin, PLUS and Kruidvat promised to sell only fair chocolate letters from 2010.

Loan as a first step to independence

In 2008 we spent 5.4 million euro on micro-credit organisations. As a result about 755,000 people were able to take out a small loan. One of them is Razia in Bangladesh.

Razia: “Thanks to a few small loans and advice from the organisation Building Resources Across Communities (BRAC) I now have four cows, a stable, eight chicken and a new house. I lease some land together with others. A few years ago I had nothing. Now I have three meals a day and I can pay my children’s school fees.”
